I've contemplated an upgrade to the shiptree.
Here is a mockup of the general idea:
The Following Users Say Thank You For This Useful Post:
Love the new idea, Seven (:
Looks more intuitive and helpful, I look forward to it!

I see you're uniting some elements from previous work. It looks nice. But while you're at it, why not go all the way? Inclusion of pups would be nice, or making a pup workshop separate that operates from the saved ship specs from the ship builder, so that you can tell what your ship needs more of and what it needs less of in either panel. It would also be nice to carry over user-specific items created in the cargohold that would allow users to view their ship in ideal configurations. Might help in overall ship design. BUT! I love the work as always Seven! Thanks man! It's appreciated!

Actually Adevna, all that you mentioned was infact in the early schematics of this tool. We even had a calculator for each zone in there as well.
*blinks* Krystal, don't get my hopes up like that! The Kitty-dancer used to be joyous... Now I realize it's mocking me! *cries*

yay - nice to see ship calc again ;)
Items created here will be usable within this. I want to make it have the ability to save any ships created for use with this
Have I told you you're my hero Seven?

sweet seven - great job
The more i look at the, the more I realize that the interface needs more to it. I've imagined something along the lines of race selection along the top, ship selection vertically along left side. The problem and challenge I've faced was that the idea of a tree visually represented takes up a lot of real estate.
We'll see what works and what won't.
I set about trying to help you solve the design problems and here are the ideas I came up with:
I initially thought that it might work to visualize the tiers with four numbered buttons that, once selected by the user, would reveal the ships in that tier. That would still be too demanding with space however since eight full-size images are a bit much at once, and the confusion was a bit too readily available in concept let alone actualized.

I then began thinking of a way to utilize the tooltip space to aid the space requirements, and I think this idea will work:

Miniaturize the graphic representations of the ships (in much the same way that you have done with the summons that are shown beside the current ship tree) and make a miniature ship heirarchy in the space that is currently taken by the weapons system display in the current ship tree. Then, so that it is possible to easily select the ship they want, have the full-sized image display in a mouseover tooltip along with the ship name, et cetera. That should save a massive amount of space and still allow for easily understood ship selection.

I also believe that as far as the weapons systems display is concerned, that a mouseover tooltip telling the name of the weapon is adequate and will save quite a bit of the room that the current text to the right of the icons annexes.

Another idea to save space, if space is required, is to make racially colored glowing orbs (with an initial for those who are colorblind) that tooltip the full name and are clickable for selection of the actual race, instead of the full title and icon.

Also, while the racial avatars at the lower corners of the panel are nice and do allow the user to distinguish the current racial selection in a very pretty manner, they also require quite a bit of space that other functions could utilize... Perhaps smaller displays and only a single, randomly chosen avatar would help?

These are just suggestions. I hope they're useful!

Why not go with our original concept design seven? Then make real estate changes to that for a version that would work well within the confines of the display borders? Get the general layout down first and then look for ways to improve upon that for a more efficient and say "detailed' look?
